Very nicely done. This is a style I haven't seen you use indeed. Everything is much thicker and fuller- full of value in comparison to some of your other drawings. I like it, makes me want to break away from my usual cartoony style and practice more real life!

Thank you! C:
Man, such a nice review.

If I ever work in charcoal, 90% of the time, this is the technique I'll use. I can't keep things neat and tidy to save my life when it comes to art, and I prefer working from light to dark, so it helps IMMENSELY to just let go -- throw down a ton of charcoal right away and then start cleaning up, lifting away charcoal from the start.

You should try it out! I used powdered charcoal to cover the paper, vine charcoal to sketch everything out because it's very eraseable, a kneaded gummy eraser to clear away charcoal and bring out the white of the paper. From there I think I may have used a tiny but of white conte chalk to highlight the very last, whitest parts.

Dat composition. Very strong diagonals, and the cropped top of the head makes for an even stronger compo. The sand running from the statues orifices gives a good sense and more powerful atmosphere of the area.

YakovlevArt responds:

oh yeah- you're totally gettin' it :)

It's as if teh Lawl is like Helios (I think that's the right lore)-- his very presence changes night into day wherever he looks, and back into night upon looking away. Would be a very, very cool concept to dig into!

I LIKE IT!

I LOVE this classic cartoon mouth on this painting! Makes me want to head to the nearest vet facility and pet a newborn kitten! XD

Back with more awesome art! The best part about this painting is probably making the black eyes really pop out. Most people color black eyes extremely flat, including myself. The overall barrage of earthy- toned colors suit the entirety of the picture. Aside from that, also great detail!

Good stuff as usual. If there's one thing I've always liked about your drawings, is that you're one out of a handful of people that build thick characters. The artwork itself reminded me of Outkast's artwork for ATLien also. The design is great, but I also think that the backgrounds could definitely be worked upon more to enhance what is already a well designed character :D

MysticSkillz responds:

Thanks Crabb, trying to get back to my original way how I use to draw woman. And I admit backgrounds aren't my strong point, but I'm going to start getting more into doing them more often. ;)

Seems like an original character that should have it's own animation debut!

The lighting in all of your works so far have been amazing! It has an airy quality about it that's different from the way other people apply lighting to their works-- perhaps your secret lies in the very intense, and sharp saturation of certain spots that makes it stand out even more. I like what you're doing themefinland :D

themefinland responds:

Thanks a dozen CrabbWalker! I haven't thought of that myself, that's something I have been doing for so long that I suppose I don't pay much attention to it anymore, heheh, but I am glad that you can spot little unique tid bits in my art which I haven't given any thought myself :D

What an odd coincidence. Subbed to you on Twitter, but didn't know you were on NG :D

Oh, and good pose and clean art!

Great, sharp detail. One thing I've noticed besides the beautiful color scheme and head design, is the extended neck - I like that little part. What I love most about this painting is the texture work on the head gear. From afar, we can't see it that much, but upclose, it's amazing :D

RussFairchild responds:

Thank you. Ya i looked for a while for long neck reference, something i always thought elves should have, and then i found a photo with the pose and everything and was like Hallelujah!!! lol

An animating night owl...without the whole 360 head turn.
